Beneficial Bacteria...WHERE IS IT REALLY???

Let's talk about beneficial bacteria. Where is it really? A lot of money is spent by filter media companies telling us that their product will provide you with the greatest abundance of beneficial bacteria. Are they right? Do we need a hundred square miles of surface area? Or are we spending money needlessly?
