In the coming time, the old Pamban Bridge will be closed and the new vertical lift Pamban Bridge will be started. About Rs 280 crore is being spent on the construction of this magnificent bridge. The new Pamban Bridge is being constructed by Railway Development Corporation Limited and it will be the country's first vertical lift sea bridge. The new bridge is being built parallel to the old Pamban Bridge. Ultra-modern technology is being used in the construction of the bridge. This bridge has been constructed in such a way that right in the middle, the part of the bridge is raised to a great height so that water ships can easily pass under it. The construction of this new bridge will help promote tourism in Tamil Nadu. People who come to visit Rameswaram Temple Jyotirlinga in Tamil Nadu will have to pass through this bridge. In the old Pamban Bridge also, a surge span was built for the ships to pass but it was operated manually. There will be nothing like this in the new bridge and it will not be operated manually. This work will be operated by electro-mechanical controlled system. It will be interlinked with the train control system so that there is no problem in connectivity. The foundation stone of this rail project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019 in Kanyakumari. The new Pamban Bridge will increase rail traffic between Pamban and Rameswaram and reduce train travel time. This new bridge has 100 spans of 18.3 meters and a navigational span of 63 meters. The old Pamban Rail Bridge connects Rameswaram to the mainland of India and is 105 years old. A new Pamban Bridge is being built in its place.
