Broadcast July 26, 2025 Yorita is a shakuhachi player who became a grand master at the age of 16 in the Kinko-ryu school of shakuhachi, which primarily focuses on classical pieces. The shakuhachi is considered an extremely difficult instrument, taking six months to master. As an elementary school student, Yorita loved playing the recorder, and at the recommendation of an acquaintance of his parents, he tried out a shakuhachi class. He made a sound on his first attempt, drawing praise from the adults around him, and began playing the instrument as a hobby. As a high school student, he participated in a shakuhachi competition at Myoanji Temple in Kyoto, where he heard Yoshinobu Taniguchi's performance. He was so moved by the performance that he shed tears. He began training under Taniguchi in Mineyama, Kyoto, traveling two to three hours each way every weekend. Two years into his training, he became the youngest grand master of the Kinko-ryu school in Japan. Since becoming a grand master, he has given recitals all over the country, not only solo but also with other musicians. Just as he was impressed by Mr. Taniguchi's performance, he said he wanted other children to be exposed to the "real thing" from an early age.
