Leni Robredo, Bam Aquino or Risa Hontiveros vs Sara Duterte 2028? | Michael, Morgan and Solomon Say
Discussed by Dad ng Bayan Michael Say, Coach ng Bayan Morgan Say and Kuya ng Bayan Solomon Say. MANILA, Philippines — With the 2028 national elections approaching, Rep. Leila de Lima said she remains optimistic that former vice president and Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo will run for president, calling her the "most winnable candidate." In an ambush interview on Tuesday, February 10, De Lima told reporters she believes Robredo has a stronger chance of winning this time, considering the split between Marcos and Duterte supporters and the current political landscape marked by pervasive corruption. Robredo, however, has since expressed that she has no plans to run for president again. "We're not losing hope na magbabago pa ang desisyon ni VP Leni na tumakbo uli sa 2028. Because for me, she's the most winnable among the possible or potential opposition candidates," De Lima said. (We're not losing hope that VP Leni will change her mind and run again in 2028. For me, she’s the most winnable among the possible or potential opposition candidates.) The minority lawmaker explained that Robredo was unable to win the 2022 presidential election due to the Marcos-Duterte alliance. "Ngayon, siguro naman yung mga hindi bumoto kay VP Leni noon ay pagkakaton nila para magreflect uli na sa mga pangyayari ngayon sa takbo ng ating ekonomiya sa takbo ng overall state ng ating bansa, the national affairs," De Lima said. (Now, perhaps those who didn’t vote for VP Leni back then have an opportunity to reflect, considering what's happening today with our economy and the overall state of our country, the national affairs.) De Lima added that Robredo's advocacy for "clean and good governance" is crucial to significantly reducing corruption in the country. While corruption may not be completely eliminated, she said it could be substantially curtailed under a president with a proven track record of implementing such measures. Last week, a group of opposition figures, particularly members of the Liberal Party and Akbayan, such as De Lima, Robredo, Sens. Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino, Kiko Pangilinan, Rep. Chel Diokno (Akbayan Party-list), and former Sen. Franklin Drilon — reportedly met for a private lunch. In January, they also shared photos of get-togethers the Liberal Party had during their anniversary celebration, sparking speculation about possible strategies for the 2028 elections. The opposition, however, has yet to announce a clear lineup or confirmed contenders for the upcoming elections. Hontiveros, at a press conference on February 9, said she is also "open and willing" to run for president or take on any role entrusted to her by her political party in the 2028 elections. Her senatorial term is set to end in 2028. Liberal Party President Erin Tañada said the party has already started preparing for the 2028 elections and is working to unite other democratic groups. He added that choosing the best candidates, especially with Vice President Sara Duterte as a possible contender, will take time and discussion, and it’s too early to say who they will field. https://www.philstar.com/headlines/20...
