Dutch Traditions: Boerenbruiloft: Carnaval Wedding in Den Bosch (1939)

It is one of the Dutch carnival traditions, especially in Limburg, North Brabant and Gelderland. The tradition of the mock peasant wedding during carnival dates back to the sixteenth century. In 1582, the Saxon Elector August married a farmer and a farmer's wife in Dresden. The noble class played the role of the peasants and the peasants were the lords. The turning ritual was the essence of carnival at the time. In this video we see a bridal couple in traditional costume (bride wears traditional Brabant hat) leaving a house and getting into a waiting horse and carriage. The procession with horse and carriages arrives to a crowd of partying and hustling people. On the steps of the town hall, the bridal couple are congratulated by "Peer van d'n Muggenheuvel" (the mayor of Den Bosch during carnival), after which the group leaves the steps and takes a seat at long tables, where Prince Carnival, his adjutant and the rest of the entourage have taken their seats. There they enjoy delicacies. NL - Boerenbruiloft in Den Bosch tijdens Carnaval. De boerenbruiloft is een gespeelde bruiloft. Het is een van de Nederlandse carnavalstradities in met name Limburgse, Noord-Brabantse en Gelderse plaatsen. De traditie van de onechte boerenbruiloft tijdens carnaval stamt uit de zestiende eeuw. In 1582 verbond de Saksische keurvorst August in Dresden een boer en een boerin in de onecht. De adellijke stand speelde de rol van de boeren en de boeren waren de heren. Het omkeerritueel was indertijd het wezen van carnaval. In dit filmpje zien we een bruidspaar in klederdracht (bruid draagt traditionele Brabantse poffer) die een woning verlaat en in een gereedstaande paard en wagen stapt. De stoet met paard en wagens komt aan bij een massa feestende en hossende mensen. Op het bordes van het stadhuis wordt het bruidspaar gefeliciteerd door "Peer van d'n Muggenheuvel" (de Bossche burgemeester tijdens carnaval), waarna het gezelschap het bordes verlaat en plaats neemt aan lange tafels, waar ook Prins Carnaval, zijn adjudant en de rest van het gevolg hebben plaatsgenomen.
