Harris Dickinson and Frank Dillane on Urchin | BFI Q&A
The director and star of Urchin, a drama about Mike - who is sleeping rough in London and prone to impulsive outbursts - visit BFI Southbank to discuss their film. The directorial debut feature from one of the UK's most exciting actors, Harris Dickinson, Urchin reveals him to also be one of our brightest filmmaking talents. Mike, a rough sleeper living on the streets of London, begs and steals his way to get by, but an abrupt altercation with a stranger sends him on a path that could turn his life around. Informed by Dickinson's own experiences of supporting people dealing with homelessness and addiction, his character-driven film offers an authentic look at complex cycles of self-destruction and the cracks in broken systems. Much more than a compelling social realism piece, the film shines with experimental flourishes and technical brilliance. As Mike, Frank Dillane is a revelation, drawing comparisons with David Thewlis in Mike Leigh's Naked. Though even when Mike's behaviour becomes the most challenging, Dillane mines a vein of sympathy that underpins the humanism of Dickinson's powerful film.
