Every Monday, we do a fictional case study. It's not a realistic story, but since it's a case study created by a clinician, I think it has a certain degree of realism. This time, we'll be looking at autism spectrum disorder. I'd like to focus on people with autism spectrum disorder who are passive. There are many types of developmental disorders, but broadly speaking, they can be divided into active-odd and passive types. What kind of person is an active-odd type? They're like Asuka Langley from Evangelion. They say what they want to say, or force their opinions on others, without caring what others think or how they view it. The passive type is more like Rei Ayanami, who is quiet and reserved and unable to express her opinions. People today might not understand, so let me say Evangelion? What's that? They'll probably say don't force your old man's hobby on them. When you think of passive types, you think of quiet characters, right? They often appear in anime. The quiet, muttering type. People like that aren't just in manga and anime, they exist quite a bit in real life too. They lack empathy and a sense of agency. They don't have any opinions of their own. They're sensible, good kids, the kind of class representative type of good kid, but it's not because they want to be good, it's because they think it's better, and they're very particular about that. They're very particular about common sense. Some people end up overdoing it and collapsing. There are many types of people who end up collapsing from playing the good kid role. For example, there are young carers, abused people, obsessive-compulsive people, perfectionists, and many other types. There are also cases where people with anxiety disorders or social anxiety play the good kid role. There are also cases where people with developmental disorders play the good kid role. Even if they're both class representatives and good kids, there are many different types. ■Case Study (Fictional) Ms. A keeps comparing me to Rei Ayanami from Evangelion. I guess we'll just go with that today. She has low empathy. Even when talking about her friends, she seems like she's "not interested." He nods, but he's just nodding and not really getting into it. He doesn't have any particular desire to do anything, so he might follow someone around, but he's not having fun. He might go to an amusement park with friends, and when his mother asks him when they get back, "What was the most fun part?" he might say, "The most fun was the juice." It's not that he played at the amusement park, but rather that the juice he had on the way there was cold and delicious. It's not that it was some special juice, but rather something you can buy from a vending machine or convenience store or anywhere, and when I ask him, "Then why did you go?" he says, "I don't know." That's the kind of thing he says. If I tell him it's okay to forget his homework, or that he doesn't need to be so particular about it, he gets mad like crazy. I don't like to say mad, but here. But that's how it is. Because he's so particular about things, he gets upset if he forgets his homework, and he also goes around checking his homework multiple times to make sure he hasn't forgotten anything. Even though they have ASD, they often also have ADHD, so they make a lot of mistakes and are often troubled. But they might not be able to express themselves, and they might be the type to check over and over again to make sure they haven't forgotten something. Many children with developmental disorders have parents with developmental disorders, but it's not necessarily the case that both parents are passive; sometimes the parents are active-odd and the child is passive. As a result, it can feel like you're at their mercy. They'll say, ``You must be bored,'' and make you go out on weekends with your parents, or make you go out and play with them. ``No, no, I actually like relaxing alone,'' they really do think, but they can't bring themselves to say it. Their parents will mercifully say, ``You look bored, and it's a shame,'' and make you do things like that. ``You should wear more girly clothes,'' they'll buy the expensive clothes your parents tell you to, even though they know they don't really want them. It's not that their parents mean any harm, either. If I later say, "I didn't really want it," I get mad at them. "But you never said you ...
