This is officially my second-to-last flatbed run before turning in the trailer, and I'm not going to lie—throwing this final tarp gave me a small ache in the chest. I've got 19 years in the seat this July, and while I'm planning my exit from the industry entirely over the next few years to focus on my other businesses, this move to Mercer's Dry Van division is all about easing the upcoming transition. Between loading delays, I break down some interior repairs I need to handle while sitting in the van docks, including fixing some fabric slits and holes up in my sleeper bunk caused by shifting gear vibrating against the walls. We also deal with a massive headache at the pump in Waterloo, New York, courtesy of a lingering fuel advance app delay that left me short on a full top-off, forcing me to rely on exact math to stretch a quarter-tank of fuel into Perrysburg, Ohio. But the biggest test of the day is speed. After logging an incredible 7.6 MPG average over 3,127 miles by strictly running 65 mph, I had to stretch my remaining 7 hours and 20 minutes of clock to make it to the truck stop tonight. To claw back time, I bumped the cruise back up to 70 mph (and 73 mph on the turnpike) to see exactly how fast our fuel economy drops when we hammer down. We finish up the night on Personal Conveyance, dodging no-parking zone drama, and hitting the wash bay at the TA TravelCenter/Petro to blast off some grease before the big switch.
