This is Margaret Michael-Smith (born 1926), known as the Girl on Film. Illness: In early childhood (around 3-4 years old), she developed a severe mental disorder. She was diagnosed with childhood schizophrenia, but today doctors agree it was severe early-onset autism. She lost her speech, stopped interacting with people, and developed stereotypical movements and angry outbursts. Her condition only worsened with age. In 1935, at the age of 9, she was admitted to St. Lethardie's Psychiatric Hospital in London, where she spent the rest of her life. Margaret died in 1996, never having had the chance to live a normal life. What's tragic? 1. Contrast: Her father's home videos show the happy, smiling child she was before her illness. The stark contrast between these images and her subsequent fate is incredibly tragic. 2. Medical Failure: At the time, there was no understanding or methods of helping children like her. Her illness was a death sentence, condemning her to a life in an institution. 3. Unique Evidence: Her story is one of the earliest documented on film, making her personal tragedy a subject of medical study. What happened to her parents? The family couldn't bear the grief. After Margaret was hospitalized, her father, **John**, left to work as an engineer in **Canada**, essentially fleeing the intolerable situation. His marriage to Margaret's mother, **Dorothy**, broke up. She remained in England with her youngest son, Peter. Thus, Margaret's illness devastated not only her life, but also the lives of her entire family. Margaret's story has been described and analyzed in detail in psychiatric literature. Her case was studied under the pseudonym "M.M." or under the name "Margaret M." Key Figures: Her story is closely linked to the British psychiatrist Dr. J.B.S. Hambly, who observed her and used her father's films in his lectures. At that time, the concept of "autism" didn't exist. She was diagnosed with "childhood schizophrenia" ("childhood psychosis"). This was the standard diagnosis for children with similar symptoms in the mid-20th century. Today, as mentioned above, in retrospective analysis, doctors almost unanimously agree that Margaret had severe early childhood autism (Kanner syndrome). Margaret spent her entire life—about 60 years—in a psychiatric hospital. She never spoke, and her condition did not improve. She died in 1996 at the age of 70. Severe forms of autism with self-injurious behavior and intellectual disabilities, like Margaret's, still require enormous resources and round-the-clock care. Furthermore, access to quality care varies greatly depending on the region and the family's financial resources. But if Margaret Michael-Smith had been born today, her life would have turned out differently. She wouldn't have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, sent to a permanent hospital, or deprived of her family. They would have tried to help her with modern methods, taught her to communicate in other ways, and, most likely, she would have remained living with her mother or a supportive family. Her story today isn't a death sentence, but a difficult but manageable challenge that the family isn't left to face alone. Progress lies in the fact that today we see such a person as an individual deserving of help, respect, and a chance at a dignified life, not as a hopeless patient who needs to be hidden from society. ---------------------------------- Instead of donations https://www.litres.ru/sergey-iosifovi...
