The Purpose of Hajj in the Light of the Quran and Hadith Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. It is not just a journey but a significant means of worship, devotion, piety, and unity among Muslims. The Quran and Hadith explain several purposes of Hajj. 1. Worship and Obedience to Allah Allah says: "And for the sake of Allah, it is obligatory to perform Hajj to this House (Kaaba) for those who have the strength to go there." — Surah Ale Imran: 97 The ultimate purpose of Hajj is to gain Allah's pleasure and obey His commands. 2. Cultivating Taqwa (Pythism) Allah says: "The best path is piety." — Surah Al-Baqarah: 197 Hajj instills fear of Allah, piety and righteousness in the heart of a person. 3. Mention of Allah Allah is mentioned in every ritual of Hajj - Talbiya, Tawaf, Sa'i, Arafat, Qurbani etc. Allah Almighty says: “So that they may come for their benefits and take the name of Allah on the appointed days.” — Surah Al-Hajj: 28 4. Forgiveness of sins The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and abstains from sins and evil deeds, he returns as if he was born from his mother's womb today.” — Sahih al-Bukhari Hajj is a great means of forgiveness for a person's sins. 5. Unity of Muslims Muslims from all over the world gather in the same place, in the same clothes (Ihram). This gives a feeling of equality, brotherhood and unity of the Ummah. 6. Reviving the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim Many of the rituals of Hajj are reminiscent of Hazrat Ibrahim, Hazrat Ismail and Hajra. Allah Almighty says: “And announce Hajj among the people, they will come to you from far and wide on foot and lean camels.” — Surah Al-Hajj: 27 7. Lesson of equality and self-respect In Hajj, rich and poor, king and pauper all wear the same clothes. This eliminates pride and makes a person remember the hereafter. 8. Remembrance of the Hereafter The Maidan-e-Arafat reminds us of the Day of Judgment, when all humans will stand before Allah.
