Ceremony for the regiment most exposed to danger / British Glider Pilot Regiment / Ranville, France

This video shows a memorial service for the British Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR) held on 7 June 2025, in Ranville, Normandy, France, to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Normandy landings. Approximately 350 British gliders participated in Operation Tonga, which began shortly after midnight on 6 June 1944, the day of the Normandy landings, and Operation Mallard, which began that evening. These gliders were piloted by pilots from the Glider Pilot Regiment. The operation was successful, but 34 members of the Glider Pilot Regiment lost their lives. The ceremony was held to commemorate these 34 pilots. This regiment was established in 1942 and disbanded in 1957. Although the regiment existed for only a short period, its casualty rate was the highest in British military history. This statistic shows just how dangerous the job of a glider pilot was. This memorial to the Glider Pilot Regiment was unveiled on 7 June 2023. This video shows the third ceremony held in front of the memorial to commemorate the Normandy landings.
