Non-Operative Achilles Healing Explained

How does a ruptured Achilles tendon heal without surgery? In this video, I explain the science of non-operative Achilles healing using one surprisingly useful analogy: a Slim Jim. Most patients are told that their Achilles tendon will “heal on its own,” but few are ever shown what is actually happening inside the tendon during the healing process. Understanding the biology behind recovery can help you make sense of rehabilitation, loading, and the long road back to normal function. In this video, we’ll cover: ✅ What happens immediately after an Achilles tendon rupture ✅ Why the hematoma (blood clot) is essential for healing ✅ How angiogenesis brings blood supply to the injured tendon ✅ How type III collagen forms the initial tendon bridge ✅ Why that early tissue is weaker and disorganized ✅ How remodeling transforms collagen into stronger tendon tissue ✅ Why progressive loading is critical for recovery ✅ How a torn Achilles tendon can reconnect without surgery As a Doctor of Physical Therapy currently recovering from my own Achilles rupture, my goal is to provide evidence-based information that helps patients understand the science behind recovery and make informed decisions about their care. If you’re recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture, considering non-operative treatment, or simply interested in the biology of tendon healing, this video is for you. 🎥 New to Achilles Recovery Lab?
