How to rappel 35m using a 60m rope
It's a common scenario: You are rappelling down a route when you discover that your rope comes just short of the next anchor. I guess you needed a 70m after all. Fear not- as long as you have some long materials with you, such as cordaletes or a handful of slings, you can rappel further than half your rope length. In this video I outline the carabiner-block method for setting-up a rappel. In addition to allowing you to lengthen your rappel, this method is also an effective way to set your rope up if you only have a grigri to rappel, or if you are using a thin rap cord that has a diameter difference of 3mm or more relative to your lead rope (a 6mm rap cord combined with a 9.2mm lead rope, for example). There are some other benefits to this rappel method which can help you add security to a climber who you have just lowered which I will show in future videos. Stay tuned!
