[단비가 간다] 제천 사투리의 매력을 찾아서

The Jecheon dialect of North Chungcheong Province differs from the typical Chungcheong dialect. The widely known Chungcheong dialect ends sentences with the "~yu" ending, as in "Wassyu?" and "Dolgureogayu." It also has a slow pace. However, this is a dialect from the southern part of Chungcheong Province. In contrast, the Jecheon dialect, located in northern North Chungcheong Province, is strong, powerful, and somewhat crude. It often ends sentences with "~yo" instead of "~yu" and is characterized by a rising intonation at the end of each word. The Jecheon dialect is spoken in areas such as Chungju, Danyang, and Yeongwol in Gangwon Province. It is believed that the Jecheon dialect was formed when people from Gyeongsang Province and Gangwon Province converged on Jecheon, a transportation hub, resulting in the collusion of various regional dialects. Now, except for those in their 70s or older, few speakers of the Jecheon dialect are known. With the decline of the region, the local language is also at risk of disappearing. Dialects embody the wisdom, culture, sentiments, and emotions of the local people. Danbi News visited speakers of the Jecheon dialect to uncover the unique characteristics of the Jecheon dialect. We also met with a collector who has been documenting the Jecheon dialect for decades and heard his thoughts on the value and methods of preserving the Jecheon dialect.
