On the 17th of Ramadan, in the second year of the Hijra, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with approximately 313 men from among the Muhajireen and Ansar, possessing only a few weapons, two horses, and seventy camels which they took turns riding. They did not set out for a major battle, but rather to intercept a Quraysh caravan to compensate for some of what had been taken from them in Mecca. However, the Quraysh mobilized with all their pride, marching out with an army of nearly a thousand fighters, heavily armed, led by their chieftains and leaders, determined to crush the Muslims and end their mission. At the wells of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, humbly supplicating to his Lord: "O God, if this small band is destroyed, You will not be worshipped on earth." God's promise of victory was fulfilled, and divine support descended, strengthening their hearts and reinforcing their ranks. The battle began with single combat, and Utbah, Shaybah, and al-Walid fell. Then the two armies clashed. The cries of "Allahu Akbar" rose in the desert of Badr, and the fighting intensified, until the fear in the hearts of the believers transformed into certainty, and their small numbers into a formidable force. The battle ended with the fall of seventy of the Quraysh leaders, and the capture of an equal number. Among the slain was Abu Jahl, the head of disbelief in Mecca. It was a political and military earthquake that shook the entire Arabian Peninsula. That day was called the Day of Distinction (Yawm al-Furqan) because it distinguished between truth and falsehood, elevated the status of the Muslims, and proved that victory is not determined by numerical superiority, but by the steadfastness of faith and sincere reliance on God.
