According to the International Labour Organization’s report titled ‘Beyond Barriers and Biases – Engendering the Indian Construction Industry’, India’s construction sector employs nearly 57 million, of which only 12% are women. This is the story of one such woman labourer, Shanti Rajput, who lives and works in northern Indian city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. As we spend one day with her, she speaks of her aspirations, which have gradually narrowed to the futures of her children alone. She believes her own dreams were left behind the day she chose to step out and earn a living.
