Exclusive!! The Seblang Dancers' Traditional Ritual of Ngelunsur, Olehsari Village, 2023. The Seblang ritual is one of the Osing people's ceremonial rituals. This ritual is performed to cleanse the village and ward off disaster, ensuring peace and tranquility. The Seblang dance ritual of Olehsari is held one week after Eid al-Fitr, featuring virgin female dancers who dance for seven consecutive days while in a trance-like state, possessed by ancestral spirits. The dancers are supernaturally selected by someone known to the local community as Gambuh, also known as a pawang. They are usually chosen from the descendants of previous Seblang dancers. Seblang has existed in Olehsari since 1930, but it is believed that the Seblang dance is actually a very ancient tradition, dating back hundreds of years, making it difficult to trace its origins. However, one theory holds that the first known Seblang was Semi, who also pioneered the first female Gandrung dance (she died in 1973). (This theory is questionable because Seblang already existed before Semi was born, and Gandrung, the offspring of Seblang, also existed.) After recovering from her illness, her mother's (Mak Midah or Mak Milah) vow had to be fulfilled. Semi was finally made a Seblang during her childhood, and as a teenager, she began to perform as a Gandrung dancer. The Seblang dance begins with a ceremony led by the Gambuh (pawang). The dancer is blindfolded by the women behind her, holding a tempeh (bamboo tray). The pawang smokes the dancer with incense smoke while reciting a mantra. After the dancer falls into a trance (unconsciousness, or kejiman in local lingo), the performance begins with the dropping of the tampah (wine-wine). The Seblang dancer, now in a trance, dances with monotonous movements, eyes closed, following the pawang's instructions and the rhythm of the gamelan (gendhing). They sometimes also dance around the village. After dancing for a while, the seblang throws a rolled-up scarf toward the audience. Anyone who is hit by the scarf must dance with the seblang. If they don't, they will be chased by the seblang until they do. In terms of attire, the Seblang dancers in Olehsari and Bakungan differ slightly, particularly in the omprog (crown), clothing, and scarf. For Seblang dancers in Olehsari village, the omprog is usually made from shredded banana stems, covering part of the dancer's face. Fresh flowers, usually picked from gardens or cemeteries, are topped with a small mirror placed in the center of the omprog. The clothes are predominantly green or yellow, and the scarf is tucked into the waist. Besides its mystical elements, the Seblang ritual also provides entertainment for visitors and local residents, with many humorous scenes performed by the seblang dancers. Seblang Olehsari 2023. Olegsari Village Head, Joko Mukhlis, expressed his gratitude that this year's ritual proceeded smoothly without any obstacles, after last year's heavy rain. "Thank God, everything, from the ritual procession to the weather, was very favorable, so everything went smoothly and there were many visitors since yesterday," said Joko. "The process of entering the ancestral spirits into the dancers can also be done in just one performance," added Joko. This year's Seblang dancer is Dwi Putri Ramadani, 19. A recent graduate of Banyuwangi State Vocational School 1, she is a descendant of the Salwati seblang.
