Hide Tanning - Make Rawhide Leather from a Deer Skin
Rawhide is one of the most useful natural materials on the planet. It is extremely versatile and can be used for a variety of things in a primitive skills, bushcraft or survival situation. It's also every useful for simple crafts around the home or farm. From primitive bow string and cordage of all kind, to primitive baskets, snares, animal traps, bow backing, shields, shoe soles, hinges, and the list goes on. In this hide tanning video, I'll show you how to make rawhide from a deer skin. You'll first need to flesh the deer hide which I cover in a previous video. Then you'll need to de-hair the hide. For this, you can use the dry scrape method or natural decomposition. But I prefer to use lye to cause the hair to slip.
