In 1513, in Santa María la Antigua del Darién, the first hospital for the sick was opened in the territory that is now Colombia. In 1564, Santa Fe inaugurated San Pedro; after its closure in the 17th century, the Hospitaller Brothers opened a facility in the cloister where the Church of San Juan de Dios now stands.
