How to Air layering Limon tree | Semmio Agriculture
Air layering is a reliable way to propagate a lemon tree and produce a new plant that is genetically identical to the parent. The process encourages roots to grow on a branch while it is still attached to the tree. What You'll Need Sharp knife or grafting knife Rooting hormone (optional, but helpful) Moist sphagnum moss or coco peat Plastic wrap or a plastic bag Twine, tape, or zip ties Aluminum foil (optional, to block light) Steps 1. Choose a Healthy Branch Select a healthy, pencil- to thumb-thick branch that is: About 1–2 years old Free of pests and disease Ideally 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) long 2. Remove a Ring of Bark About 20–30 cm (8–12 in) from the tip: Cut two rings around the branch, 2–3 cm (about 1 in) apart. Connect the cuts with a vertical slit. Peel off the bark between the cuts. Scrape the exposed wood lightly to remove the thin green cambium layer. This helps prevent the wound from healing over before roots form. 3. Apply Rooting Hormone (Optional) Dust or brush rooting hormone onto the exposed area to encourage faster root development. 4. Wrap with Moist Moss Surround the exposed section with a handful of moist sphagnum moss. The moss should be damp, not dripping wet. 5. Seal the Moss Wrap the moss tightly with clear plastic. Secure both ends with tape or ties to keep moisture in. Optionally cover with aluminum foil to protect roots from sunlight and excessive heat. 6. Wait for Roots to Form Check periodically to ensure the moss remains moist. Lemon trees typically develop roots in 6–12 weeks, depending on temperature and growing conditions. You'll be able to see roots through clear plastic. 7. Separate and Plant Once a good mass of roots has formed: Cut the branch just below the rooted section. Remove the plastic carefully. Plant the rooted layer in a pot with well-draining potting mix. Keep it in partial shade for a few weeks while it establishes. Best Time For most tropical and subtropical climates (including much of Cambodia), air layering lemon trees works best during the warm growing season, typically from late spring through the rainy season, when the tree is actively growing. Tips for Success Use healthy, vigorous branches. Keep the moss consistently moist. Avoid air layering during cool or drought-stressed periods. If the branch carries fruit, remove the fruit so the plant can focus on root production. A lemon tree propagated by air layering can often begin flowering and fruiting sooner than one grown from seed because it comes from mature wood. Please Subscribe for more videos. Thanks
