This is a gentle practice that helps lymph to flow freely. Lymph is a fluid that moves through tiny tube-like structures in the area between cells, through larger lymph vessels, and through lymph nodes. It circulates through deep breathing, muscle contraction and gentle, rhythmic movements. In this practice we breathe out of pursed lips with some force; we move core, neck, and limbs in slow rhythmic movements--all of which supports the flow of lymph back to the two veins at mid-collarbone where the lymph enters the bloodstream. Lymph flow is important because the lymph system takes up excess liquid in the body, supports the immune system, and drains our systems of pathogens, toxins, and abnormal cells. The poem "We are Rivers" is by Nancy Rosenberger and compares rivers like the Klamath River with our bodies. Both have blocks and both "yearn to flow free." Nancy is a Kripalu-trained, 500-hour yoga instructor who is dedicated to yoga for the mind, heart and body.
