Thousands wait at South Africa border camp, aid workers fear disease outbreak
Thousands of foreign nationals are being housed at a temporary repatriation centre outside Musina, near South Africa's border with Zimbabwe, after anti-migrant protests forced many to leave towns and cities across the country. Footage shows families waiting inside large tents at the Proefplaas Farm facility, where men, women and children are being housed separately as they wait for transport home. "I will not come back to South Africa. Never," said a Zimbabwean national. Some people at the camp said overcrowding and dust were worsening already difficult conditions. "We are sick. Oh, we are sick because of the dust," said a Malawian national. Aid workers said the steady flow of arrivals was putting the newly established camp under severe pressure. "So this is the Zimbabwean women and children's tent. They separated the men and the women. This is where the ladies and the children are. And as you can see, it's not ideal," said Nithaam Bawa from Gift of the Givers. Bawa said people could spend one or two days at the site before securing a bus home, raising fears over sanitation and the risk of disease.
