Yet hidden deep within lies a unique network of brooks and springs. This centuries-old water system, rare even in Europe, is fed by an underground water reservoir that collects rain and channels it toward lower rivers and lakes. Centuries ago, people dug artificial springs (sprengen) to regulate the water and power watermills, for example in the production of paper. Nestled between the higher sandy soils of the Veluwe and the river IJssel lie the Veluwe wetlands. This low-lying area was once regularly flooded and created valuable meadows for haymaking and cattle. The castle is surrounded by an extensive park forest with ponds, a historic water tower, a coach house, an orchard and a vegetable garden. 🌳𝐊𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐨: Kroondomein Het Loo is a royal estate and with 10,400 hectares it is also the largest estate in the Netherlands. The area is made up of 97 percent forests and heathlands. The remaining 3 percent consists of farmland, gardens and buildings. The estate includes the Royal Forestry of Het Loo and the Palace Park.. 🥏 𝐕𝐚𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦: The Vaassen brook system is one of the most valuable cultural and historical brook systems of the Veluwe and has remained largely untouched. It originated because the owners of Cann𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞enburch Castle managed the water rights and generated income by building watermills. In the nineteenth century, many of these mills played an important role in the industrialization of Vaassen. 🌿𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡: The Tongerense Heath features a mix of dry and wet heathland. The pools in the area lie on an impermeable soil layer, which allows the water to remain standing. Variations in elevation and moisture create a diverse vegetation. Originally, the terrain was largely covered by a fairly uniform Scots pine forest. Today, newly created clearings allow the forest to regenerate naturally, resulting in a more varied and dynamic landscape. ⛱ 𝐊𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐝: The Kievitsveld is a diverse area consisting of ponds, beaches, former fish ponds, and small forest plots. The various water bodies, including the Smallertse Pond and the Nijmolense Pond, were created by sand extraction. The Smallertse Pond is designed for day recreation and features two beaches. South of the Nijmolense Pond are several water areas that were once used as fish ponds. In this part of the area, a valuable natural habitat has now developed.
