In Matthew 5:3, Jesus declares, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” This first beatitude opens the Sermon on the Mount. It reveals the values ​​of the Kingdom of God, often contrasted with those of the world. The world admires strength, success, and self-reliance. God looks first and foremost at the heart and dependence on Him. Biblical happiness does not depend on circumstances. It consists of living under God’s favor and approval. Being poor in spirit does not mean lacking intelligence or money. It means acknowledging one’s spiritual poverty before God. It means admitting that we cannot save ourselves. The example of the tax collector shows the attitude that God approves of. God resists the proud but shows grace to the humble. 👉 The Kingdom of Heaven already belongs to those who place their trust in Christ. This beatitude calls us to live in humility and daily dependence on God. When our resources run out, we discover the infinite riches of God’s grace.
