State Route 74 East | Orange County to Palm Desert | Full Length Highway Drive

This drive covers the entire length of State Route 74, from coastal Orange County to Palm Desert in the Coachella Valley. The first part of the trip is on the Ortega Highway which winds through the mountains of eastern Orange County to western Riverside County and then goes downhill to Lake Elsinore. The route crosses both Interstate 15 and 215 and runs concurrently briefly with the latter. SR 74 goes through the Inland Empire cities of Perris and Hemet before it reaches the scenic part of the drive, gaining in elevation on the way to Mountain Center. The highway then becomes known as the Pines to Palms Scenic Byway, appropriately named because the natural tree landscape goes from pines to palms. This highway is both beautiful and potentially dangerous, as it has many sharp turns and drop offs from the road.
