Agudás: a comunidade brasileira no Benin que convive com marcas da escravidão

Throughout the 19th century, a large number of enslaved Africans who had gained their freedom in Brazil decided to return and settle again on the west coast of the African continent. On their return, they brought with them culinary practices such as cozido (a traditional stew) and feijoada (a black bean stew), as well as the Portuguese language and other cultural markers that can still be found today in countries like Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. In Benin, these Brazilian returnees are known as Agudás. Among the most emblematic figures in the consolidation of this community in the former kingdom of Dahomey is Francisco Felix de Souza, known as Chachá, from Bahia, who founded Brazilian neighborhoods in the historic city of Ouidah. The historical contradiction is that Souza was also one of the main figures linked to the Atlantic slave trade in the 19th century.
