Tsumago-juku, Nagano Prefecture (the 42nd post town on the Nakasendo) Magome-juku, Gifu Prefecture (the 43rd post town on the Nakasendo) I strolled through these two post towns in the snow. I felt as if I had traveled back in time to the Edo period. Tsumago-juku, where the streets remain unchanged from the Edo period, offers a glimpse of life in the Edo period, rather than the bustle of a tourist destination. Magome-juku, spread out along a cobblestone slope, is the birthplace of the literary master Shimazaki Tōson and the setting for his masterpiece, "Before the Dawn."
