In the collective imagination, we tend to think that, as in the animal world, it's the male who takes the initiative. This demonstrates how underestimated from the outset is the fact that when a man approaches a woman, it's usually because he's subliminally picked up on certain nonverbal cues from her and unconsciously interpreted them as an invitation to approach. It's crucial for men to become aware of this and learn to read the nonverbal dance a woman uses when she's interested in approaching her and the one she uses when, conversely, she wants to keep her distance.
