Instead, I was met with a brilliant songwriter who leans into dense layering, bold harmonic turns, and a vocal performance that swings from playful to unhinged. In this video, I break down the shifting tonal centers, the subtly-reused motifs that tie the song together, and John DeDominici’s bass lines that refuse to sit still, dancing around the root notes and constantly flirting with tension. This is punk that feels surprisingly sophisticated: melodic, frantic, and just messy enough in all the right ways.
