WEST LINDSEY PARISH #120: TEALBY Welcome to Tealby everybody, a Wolds village like no other, situated 3 miles northeast of Market Rasen on the road to Binbrook. This might well be the true definition of a Wolds village, and after a walk around this, you’ll see why. It has everything we’ve come to expect from this part of West Lindsey, and then some. For a long time the placename Tealby was thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon “tæfl” or “tefl” which means "gaming-board", presumably because of the square piece of land upon which it sits. However its now thought it’s a reference to the Taifali – a word given to a horse-riding Germanic or Sarmatian people who invaded or were brought into Gaul by the Romans as mercenaries, and later crossed to Britain with the Anglo-Saxons. Tealby has for a long time been a village with an industrial heart, powered by the flow of the River Rase, which drove the wheels of its many watermills. These mills would grind corn, tan leather and make paper. Tealby still has The Kings Head – the oldest thatched pub in Lincolnshire. There’s one name that stands out in these parts – Tennyson. A lot of Tealby was owned by the Tennyson d’Eyncourt family, and they lived at Bayons Manor, a now demolished castle-like house. In 1807 a ploughman working for the Tennysons uncovered the Tealby Hoard - 6000 silver coins.
