Across 30 hard-fought years, Neurosis have spearheaded a particularly intense, cathartic and spiritual brand of heavy music that has influenced everyone from Mastodon and Lamb of God to Chelsea Wolfe and Converge. In our new documentary “A Shadow Memory,” we dig deep into the origins, inspirations and resonances of the band, guided by the group’s singer-guitarist Scott Kelly. In part one of the two-part doc, he looks back on his discovery of punk rock, the formation of Neurosis, his catalytic introduction to fellow singer-guitarist Steve Von Till and the philosophical underpinnings of one of music’s most devoutly DIY and steadfastly uncompromising groups.
