Speeches that have made Europe: Toomas Hendrik Ilves (2016)
Powerful. Moving. Visionary. There were speeches in the history of the European Union that have made Europe the way it is today. In early 2016, Europe was being challenged by terrorist attacks in its cities, the hosting of refugees fleeing the war in Syria, the Eurozone crisis, Russia's invasion of Crimea, the prospect of Brexit and the need to face the digital revolution. Against this backdrop, the European Parliament invited Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves to share his perspective. A son of refugees, IT-savvy, and a former diplomat and Member of the European Parliament, he called on Europeans to reject 'the basest of our instincts' and 'put forward the best of us'.
