Understanding the BIG BOY Solenoid The BIG BOY solenoid (often a high-current, continuous-duty solenoid) serves as an Automatic Charging Relay (ACR) or battery isolator in many Class A motorhomes. It performs several critical functions: Battery Isolation: It separates the chassis (engine) battery from the house (deep-cycle) batteries when the engine is off. This prevents house loads (like the fridge or lights) from draining your engine's starting battery. Combined Charging: When the engine is running and the chassis battery is fully charged (or when external shore power is charging the house batteries), the solenoid closes (engages). This connects the two battery banks, allowing the alternator to charge the house batteries or the converter/charger to charge the chassis battery. Emergency Start Feature: This same solenoid (or a similar one) is often used for the "Emergency Start" or "Auxiliary Start" switch on the dashboard, which temporarily connects both battery banks to provide a boost if your engine battery is dead. Common Problems That Lead to This Repair The BIG BOY is a high-wear component that often fails in one of two ways: Failure to Engage/Disengage: The solenoid is stuck open or closed. This leads to the house batteries not charging while driving or a parasitic draw that kills your engine battery. Internal Wear and Pitting: Due to the heavy current loads it carries, the internal contacts pit and degrade over time. This creates high resistance and a voltage drop, which means your batteries are never getting a full charge and the solenoid itself can overheat. Our repair addresses this exact problem!
