But if this is my introduction to him, I am not complaining even a little bit. What a way to meet an artist. Utada's voice lending itself to iconic anime and video games is nothing new — but "JANE DOE" as the ending theme to the Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc movie? That pairing makes complete sense. I haven't had the time to watch Chainsaw Man (life did that to me 😔) but the emotion in this song made the connection crystal clear without me needing a single frame of context. And that's the thing about this song that got me — you could take away every subtitle, every translation, every visual cue, and you would still understand exactly what this is about. Their voices alone carry the devastation. The sadness doesn't need a translator. It just lands. The harmonies. 💀 The harmonies between Utada and Yonezu are genuinely breathtaking. Two voices that somehow feel like they were designed to exist in the same song. The way the grief sits in both of their deliveries — it's not performed, it's felt. That's rare. This one unlocked something in me.
