Also called the Gaussian curve, it enjoys great fame because it describes so many natural phenomena. This is mainly due to the famous CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM, which states that a sufficiently large sample drawn from any population follows a normal distribution with a mean equal to the population mean and a variance equal to the population variance divided by the sample size. The bell-shaped curve peaks at the mean and rapidly decreases as one moves away from it (both toward the right and left tails). This means that values around the mean are more likely to occur, and values near the tails are less likely. Another characteristic that emerges from the normal density curve is the standard deviation: the flatter the density function, the greater the dispersion and therefore the standard deviation; the more tapered the curve, the lower the variability and therefore the standard deviation.
