Individuals who violated Islamic law are being dragged out of a park in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Among them, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were beaten 21 times with a rattan cane by a hooded executioner for the crime of kissing during a TikTok live broadcast. The couple was arrested in April after authorities filed a complaint following a live broadcast of them kissing in a car on February 27, which went viral. The problem was that they were unmarried. Since 2015, this law has been extended to the remaining 1% of the population who are not Muslim. Islamic law permits up to 100 lashes for moral transgressions, including extramarital or same-sex sexual relations. It also punishes gambling, drinking alcohol, women wearing tight-fitting clothing, and men skipping Friday prayers. International human rights organizations point out that this public flogging is a human rights violation, noting that Indonesia has ratified a convention mandating the abolition of inhumane punishments.
