In the 1760s James Ferguson built this five gear orrery. It has become known as Ferguson’s Mechanical Paradox orrery because one gear drives three other gears in three different directions. But that is only a very small part of this orrery…it is also a very clear representation of the relationship between the earth, moon and sun.
