Studio Backlot Tour (2000/2006) | Disney-MGM Studios | Walt Disney World
Studio Backlot Tour (SBT) was a Day 1, Disney-MGM Studios attraction, opening on May 1, 1989 at Walt Disney World. The attraction closed at the end of September 2014, a victim of the Pixar and Star Wars expansion. SBT (along with The Magic Of Disney Animation and perhaps even The Great Movie Ride) was the last vestige of the much larger "How a real studio works" theme of Disney-MGM Studios. While it's a shame they were all finally closed, the Studios did receive a much needed update and expansion. (Disney-MGM was once going to be a real TV/Movie/Radio studio, and some production did occur early. But, that lawsuit between MGM and Disney put that idea to rest. You can read condensed version here: https://BackroadJunkie.com/ThemeParks... .) The attraction went though several changes in its 25 year run, and became shorter with each change, due mostly to park expansion. SBT just took up a lot of valuable space when resort attendance was growing. This video was shot in 2000 and has the original water tank pre-show. (I thought was better than the Pearl Harbor makeover. Take that, Micheal Bay, lol.) It has the tram tour of Residential Street and the Boneyard, and has a real, live cast member tour guide. Being shot in 2000 also means it's spiffied up NTSC 480i. I'm also including an HD video of Catastrophe Canyon from 2006. If you compare the video after Catastrophe Canyon, it shows how much of the attraction was gutted for the Lights, Motors, Action! installation. (But at least there's video of Walt's plane!) If you've never been on this attraction, the ride vehicles are much like the parking lot trams, which shuttle guests from the parking lots to the front gates. It has a powered lead vehicle, which tows 5 trailers behind it, and can handle around 200 guests. This made the entire vehicle several dozen feet long. Your tour guide cast member is at the front of the tram with the driver. This creates a problem for those not in the front couple of cars. Your tour guide will point something out, and the thing said tour guide pointed out doesn't arrive to your trailer until quite a bit later. I fixed this by time shifting the audio by about 15-20 seconds. (Well, technically, I shifted the video, since the audio is uninterrupted.) While what our Tour Guide describes matches the video, if something seems off, that's because it is. Video and audio get resync'd at Catastrophe Canyon.
