Hat Merz recht – Müssen wir alle mehr arbeiten? | Deutschland, stabil?
The Christian Democrats are united in their belief that we should work more and longer hours to revive the economy. At the same time, according to a 2024 Bertelsmann study, almost half of all Germans want the exact opposite – more flexible working hours instead of endless overtime. Especially among younger generations, there seems to be a growing number who can no longer imagine a 40-hour week. But is Gen Z really as lazy as they are often portrayed – or do they simply have a new understanding of work? For this report from “Germany, Stable?”, worlds collide. We talk to people from different generations about their ideal vision of the working world. Line (19), a hairdressing apprentice, regularly works six days a week. Tunahan (23), a TikToker and dental student, wants to switch to a four-day week immediately after graduating. Céline (32), an entrepreneur, lives the 16-hour day and demands greater commitment from the younger generation. And Susanne, an entrepreneur from the Boomer generation, takes a critical look at the work ethic of Gen Z – but shows understanding for one point. What motivates young people like Céline, Line, and Tunahan? Why do they rely on completely different work models – and what lies behind their convictions? Between hustle culture and work-life balance, between tradition and change – we delve into the discussion: How do we want to work in the future? In our new report series “Germany, Stable?” we regularly examine a current topic that is of particular concern to young people in Germany. 📌 CONTENTS 00:00 Merz wants everyone to work more – what does Gen Z say? 00:51 Student Tunahan: Eat, sleep, work – I want more out of life 02:03 Consultant Susanne: The golden carrot is no longer available 04:01 Tunahan: Why full-time work when there are other options? 06:45 Trainee Line: I find the attitude of never working full-time shocking. 09:49 Entrepreneur Céline: My standard working hours are 16 hours. 13:23 Conclusion: Do we all need to work more?
