The Vice President of the National Congress, Godofredo Fajardo, is proposing to replicate in Honduras the security model implemented by President Nayib Bukele in El Salvador. The congressman asserts that the violence, massacres, assaults, and fear experienced by thousands of Hondurans necessitate the implementation of “tough on crime” measures, including territorial control, extraction operations, and even a possible temporary state of emergency. During the debate, security and justice experts pointed out that a comprehensive plan must also include prevention, prison oversight, intelligence, investigation, and the vetting of justice system personnel. Kenneth Madrid warned that without certified prosecutors, judges, and police officers, “there will be no results,” while the high economic cost of replicating the Salvadoran model was discussed. Fajardo stated that his initiative has already been presented to the National Congress and assured that it would have majority support in the plenary session.
