A Brand-New Vintage Mall No One Knows About

An original Arizona mining town packed with antique shops brings the thrill of finding beautiful vintage treasures before other dealers know they’re here! We visit a place frozen in time and filled with wonderful antiques and vintage surprises. Globe, Arizona delighted us on our first visit twenty years ago, and we return to explore this charming 1890s mining boom town that has changed little since the territorial days. We begin where we finished then, at Yesterday’s Treasures, a faded pair of old houses by the railroad tracks whose rooms provide a perfect setting for vintage clothing, kitchenware, quality wood furniture, showcase smalls, and unexpected discoveries. We find a great deal on a Kron Siamese cat TV lamp, puzzle over how a statue of King Kamehameha arrives in the Arizona desert, and enjoy an innocent Playmate doll from the 1930s, long before that term gained a different meaning. Wild Western style appears everywhere in this area. Siesta Ware in rope handled trays, Blakely cactus beverage sets, and dinnerware with cattle brands and cowboy scenes reflect the spirit of the Southwest. Local mining ephemera and equipment, along with a collection of beautiful vintage copper ware, speak to the town’s heritage. A rib from an old steamer sunk in 1925 finds new life as a uniquely repurposed bench. Stylish hats and vintage clothing, quilts, and sewing patterns fill one bedroom, while colorful glass from Bohemia and Fenton, uranium glass, California pottery, and cast iron catch our eye throughout the house. After gathering our bargain finds, we continue into Globe’s walkable turn-of-the-century downtown. There is far more antique and vintage shopping here than we can complete in one day, so we choose to visit a brand-new antique mall called Lucky Duck Antiques. It feels like striking gold to discover a new mall before antique resellers arrive in force! The paint still smells fresh, vendors are just moving in, and every booth promises new treasures waiting to be discovered. Many items do not yet have prices, so we ask and receive wonderful deals on an 1890s spelter dog and child figure and a Peter Max–inspired scarf. We discover another fun TV lamp, a great 1970s fringed vest, and many more fun and fashionable antique and vintage pieces. One space filled with mid-century modern furniture, a Jere enamel tree, and dramatic 1960s art glass offers remarkable value, and a 1940s doctor’s exam table would join us if only we had the room. New antique malls often reveal things we have never seen. A curiously named tin of Salad Educators, a 1920s floor lamp with its original fringed shade, an anemometer, and a one-of-a-kind working freighter ship model all capture our attention. Antique Staffordshire figurines, rolls of old wire fencing, a 1950s picnic suitcase, and 1980s artwork by Carol Griggs surprise us at every corner of this fine new antique emporium.
