In this episode of Rail Away, which premieres in its entirety on NPO2 on December 30, 2021, we're in the Netherlands. When the Netherlands suddenly experiences snow and frost in February 2021, it's the perfect opportunity for Rail Away to film a snow episode in our own country. The result is an episode along the IJssel River, from Zwolle to Zutphen. An episode with plenty of snow and ice fun. This snow episode begins at the completely renovated Zwolle station. As the Dutch Railways train leaves the outskirts of the city, we see what happens when it freezes in the Netherlands: we put on our shoes and enjoy the cold winter weather. The railway line along the IJssel River was completed in 1866. This represented a major improvement for towns and villages along the river. Until then, connections between towns were maintained by steamboat on the river and horse-drawn carriages on the road. Winter in the Netherlands also presents a major challenge for NS (Dutch Railways) and ProRail. With the winter timetable, some trains are cancelled, while others are extended. Ice formation under trains is also a serious problem. After the villages of Wijhe and Olst, the train arrives in Deventer. The expansive landscape transitions into a more wooded area with stately country houses. The rail journey ends in one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands: Zutphen.
