Sanctuary Series — Part 10 For nearly half a century, Advent believers focused on Daniel 8:14 and the Judgment while still struggling to answer one basic question: What is the sanctuary? This presentation examines the first decades of Adventist thinking about Daniel 8:14 and the sanctuary. Early Advent believers were convinced that the prophecy pointed to Christ's soon return, but they misunderstood the identity of the sanctuary itself. Many assumed the sanctuary was the earth and that its cleansing referred to the Second Coming. In this study we trace how attention became focused on the prophecy, the Judgment, and the Advent hope, while the sanctuary question remained largely unresolved. We also explore why some early pioneers placed the subject on the back burner as they concentrated on other theological and practical challenges facing the movement. This is Part 1 of a series tracing the development of the Seventh-day Adventist understanding of the sanctuary.
