When World War I ended in 1918, Germany found itself in a very difficult situation. The country had suffered enormous human losses, its economy was crippled, and the Treaty of Versailles imposed harsh conditions, including war reparations, military restrictions, and territorial losses. Many Germans viewed the treaty as a national humiliation, generating a deep sense of frustration and a desire to restore lost prestige. During the early postwar years, political and economic instability led to frequent crises that threatened the survival of the fledgling Weimar Republic. One of the most critical moments came with hyperinflation in 1923. Prices were rising so rapidly that money was losing its value within hours, and many families saw their savings wiped out. However, beginning in the mid-1920s, a series of economic reforms and international agreements allowed the currency to stabilize and attracted foreign investment. German industry began to recover, cities experienced significant growth, and the country enjoyed a period of relative prosperity known as the "Roaring Twenties." The situation changed again with the Great Depression of 1929. Unemployment soared, and millions were plunged into poverty. In this context, political movements emerged, promising to restore stability and return Germany to its former status as a great power. Throughout the 1930s, the government spearheaded massive infrastructure projects, boosted industrial production, and reduced unemployment through aggressive government intervention. Simultaneously, a large-scale rearmament program was initiated, allowing for the rebuilding of much of the military capacity that had been curtailed after the war. By the end of the 1930s, Germany had radically transformed its economic and military position compared to the years following World War I. The combination of industrial recovery, public investment, reorganization of the production apparatus, and military expansion had made the country one of the major powers in Europe. However, this strengthening was closely linked to expansionist policies and increasing militarization, which ultimately led to the outbreak of World War II, a conflict even more devastating than its predecessor.
