Punk emerged in the heat of violence of the 1980s as a cry of rebellion and resistance, offering young people an alternative to life on the streets. In 1980s Medellín, bullets echoed like a tragic soundtrack through the streets of the neighborhoods. Amidst this daily explosion, a cry emerged, a spark of resistance that sprouted in the form of strident chords and rebellious lyrics: punk. In a city where young people saw their friends fall victim to violence or be seduced by gangs, punk represented a refuge, a social movement that offered them an alternative, a way to escape the chaos and, at the same time, to confront it with a defiant attitude. "Punk was what saved me," recalls Caliche, leader of the band Desadaptados, one of the pioneering groups in the city's punk scene.
