China increasingly needs resources and is seeking them, more than ever, in Latin America. For its military industry, China needs the lithium triangle, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile, which concentrate almost 60% of the world's reserves of that mineral. The Peruvian port of Chancay, inaugurated at the end of 2024, is also essential for China: from there, Asia can be reached eleven days faster than by sailing other routes. And China also needs Latin America's agricultural and fishing resources to feed a population of almost 1.5 billion people. Why, then, do Latin American countries accept extraction agreements that cause irreversible environmental damage? Why do they allow Chinese fishing vessels to deplete fishing grounds in their territorial waters or even in protected areas like the Galapagos? And why is the main port in the Americas 60% in Chinese hands?
