A self-made war hero and the father of Yugoslav socialism, a nationalist and pragmatic form of socialism that governed the diverse mosaic of the Republic of Yugoslavia for 35 years—a union that brought together the peoples of Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and others. We are talking about Josip Broz Tito. Pragmatic with the Anglo-Saxons and disloyal to the Soviet Kremlin, the first communist president to confront Stalin during his lifetime, led a period of unparalleled stability and economic and social growth in the Republic of Yugoslavia with a diplomatic glove in one hand and a rifle in the other, while managing to neutralize the region's serious internal rivalries. Marshal Tito and his experiment in socialist self-management became a benchmark for non-aligned countries seeking a path different from capitalist or Soviet subservience. However, today, nothing remains of his experiment but a mixture of indifference, oblivion, rejection, and what some call Yugonostalgia—a feeling of longing that some experience for the old Yugoslavia and its way of life.
