Flamingo chick plays follow-the-leader
Playing follow the keeper, this nine-day-old flamingo chick is being cared for behind the scenes after it was abandoned as an egg. When the chick is old enough—and coordinated enough!—it will join the rest of the flock. You can spot two other flamingo chicks among the flock on your next visit. For now the little flamingo receives special care including feedings up to five times a day (fed a slurry of corn oil, calcium, vitamin E and egg). Getting enough sunlight and exercise is very important, so keepers are teaching the chick to follow them so they can take it on walks. This helps the chick bond with its keepers and stretch those growing legs. Produced by Kirsten Pisto/Woodland Park Zoo
