With Care and Desperation is an eight hour television narrative, featuring four prominent writers: García Márquez, George Steiner, György Konrád and Jorge Semprun. This Programme – which has been split up into four two-hour episodes- is a monologue interieur, a stream of consciousness, in which the four central figures tell about the crucial and most intimate experiences in their lives. That spectrum of intriguing poignant and staggering stories and recollections reveals an image of the 20th century for once not framed in an all-embracing audio-visual display, but just reflecting the principals’ personal lives. Part three: “The glass is cracking but it can still be used to drink from” deals with the post-war ambitions and what they came to in the end.
