On January 15, 1966, the Nigerian Government was overthrown by a military coup. Major Kaduna Nzeogwu and the other junior officers who led the coup, however, failed to take power. Aguyi Ironsi was named Military Head of State following the coup which led to the counter Coup of July 1966 and then the Biafra War in Nigeria that led to the demise of over 3 million Nigerians.
